Pauline Reage is the pseudonym under which was concealed for many years Desclos Anne (1907-1998), French intellectual who in 1994 admitted to being the author of this novel. Journalist, film critic, translator and collaborator of the Nouvelle Revue Française was assistant Gallimard Jean Paulhan: for him, like a love letter he wrote this novel in 1954, and later, its sequel, Return to Roissy .
